FAQ

Q: CAN MY COMIC BE IN A NON-ENGLISH LANGUAGE?

A: All the lettering in your comic must be in ENGLISH. If the judges can't read it, then they won't understand your story. If there is something written in another language within the artwork (street signs, titles, etc) then it should be fine, but if it is vital to the story, you should consider making it English.

Q: DOES IT MATTER HOW I USE MY ASSIGNED PROP, SETTING, AND DIALOGUE?

A: The way you use your assigned prop, setting, and dialogue will affect your score. We recommend you use them in a meaningful way. The more critical it is to the story, the better. You will not be disqualified if you improperly use a prop or setting, but your score will suffer for it.

Q: DO I HAVE TO USE THE EXACT PUNCTUATION ON THE ASSIGNED DIALOGUE?

A: No, feel free to make it a question or an exclamation. Or a thought bubble. Or you can make it written on a sign on the wall. Or something that's heard over the radio. The more creative the better.

Q: DOES MY ENTIRE COMIC HAVE TO TAKE PLACE IN MY ASSIGNED SETTING?

A: It does not. You must use the setting at least once in the comic, but you can have scenes in other settings as well. Your score will be affected by the way you use the setting in your story, so if it just cuts there for like one panel, it might affect your score negatively.

Q: CAN I SUBMIT A SCRIPT/PENCILS?

A: You may only submit completed comics. Judges need to read the finished product as if they were reading any other comic. They're not just judging the writing or the inks, but the whole experience.

Q: DOES MY COMIC NEED TO BE COLORED?

A: No, black and white comics are great!

Q: WHAT SIZE/DIMENSION/RESOLUTION DOES MY COMIC NEED TO BE?

A: We have no requirements for size, dimensions or resolution. Your comic pages can be standard comic book shape or square or landscape or whatever you want.

A good standard for comic art is 11" x 17", which is 3300px x 5100px at 300dpi.

For the PDF files, we don't have file size limits, but a five page comic should be less than 20MB if compressed properly. Remember this isn't for print, so if it looks good on your computer screen, then that's all that matters.

Q: I DON'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE MY COMIC INTO A PDF, CAN YOU HELP?

A: HERE is a video about making a comic into PDF using Adobe Indesign (our recommended method). You can also check out the MAKING COMICS 101 page for help reaching out to other comic creators who may be able to help you out.

Q: CAN I UPLOAD MY COMIC EARLY?

A: Yes. But once you submit, that is the final version that will be judged. So if you're done before the 5 days are up, we recommend taking the extra time to think of any changes before submitting. If your comic file has some kind of technical error making it unreadable, we will reach out for a fixed version.

Q: DOES THE 5 PAGE COUNT INCLUDE A COVER OR TITLE PAGE?

A: The 5 page count is only for the interior pages, the pages where the story is told. Covers and title pages are allowed, but not required.

Q: CAN I MAKE A STAR WARS/SPIDER MAN/HARRY POTTER FAN-FICTION COMIC?

A: Nope. You must own the characters, settings, and stories. Unless it is in the Public Domain.

Q: WHAT CRITERIA WILL MY COMIC BE JUDGED ON?

A: STORY, DIALOGUE, ART, COLORS, LETTERING, LAYOUT, PACING, ORIGINALITY, and the creative use of the assigned PROP, SETTING, and DIALOGUE.

Q: WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE A TEAM TO MAKE A COMIC WITH?

A: There is no minimum number for teams, so if you can write, draw, and letter the comic yourself, go for it! If you need help finding a collaborator, we recommend using social media like twitter, instagram, or reddit. Or reach out to us and we'll tweet out a message on your behalf.

Q: WILL YOU BE PUBLISHING THE WINNING COMICS?

A: We will be publishing the finalists (top 10 comics) into an anthology. It will most likely be a digital anthology hosted on our website, but we will work out the details with all the finalists before moving forward.

Q: I'M UNDER 13/18 YEARS OLD, CAN I ENTER MY COMIC?

A: Unfortunately, if you are under 13 years old, you may NOT enter the contest. If you are between the ages of 13 and 17, you may enter, but must have permission from a parent or legal guardian. These age restrictions apply to the person submitting the comic, paying the submission fee, and accepting the awards and prizes.

Q: CAN I PAY WITH CHECK/CASH/MONEY ORDER?

A: At this time we only accept payments via our secure online checkout and PayPal.
