FAQ

Q: CAN MY COMIC BE IN A NON-ENGLISH LANGUAGE?

A: All the lettering in your comic must be in ENGLISH. If the judges can't read it, then they won't understand your story. If there is something written in another language within the artwork (street signs, titles, etc) then it should be fine, but if it is vital to the story, you should consider making it English.

Q: DOES IT MATTER HOW I USE MY ASSIGNED PROP, SETTING, AND DIALOGUE?

A: The way you use your assigned prop, setting, and dialogue will affect your score. We recommend you use them in a meaningful way. The more critical it is to the story, the better.

Q: DOES MY ENTIRE COMIC HAVE TO TAKE PLACE IN MY ASSIGNED SETTING?

A: It does not. You must use the setting at least once in the comic, but you can have scenes in other settings as well. Your score will be affected by the way you use the setting in your story.

Q: CAN I SUBMIT A SCRIPT/PENCILS?

A: You may only submit completed comics. Judges need to read the finished product as if they were reading any other comic. They're not just judging the writing or the inks, but the whole experience.

Q: WHY ARE YOU CHARGING MONEY FOR ENROLLMENT?

A: After all of our expenses, the prizes, the marketing costs, we don't expect to make much of a profit. We're ok with that because we want Ghost City to grow into something bigger. We'd love to have a presence at conventions, do in-person meet-ups, print anthologies of the winning comics, and so many ideas that are currently out of reach.

Q: CAN I UPLOAD MY COMIC EARLY?

A: Yes. But once you submit, that is the final version that will be judged. So if you're done before the 5 days are up, we recommend taking the extra time to think of any changes before submitting. If your comic file has some kind of technical error making it unreadable, we will reach out for a fixed version.

Q: DOES THE 5 PAGE COUNT INCLUDE A COVER OR TITLE PAGE?

A: The 5 page count is only for the interior pages, the pages where the story is told. Covers and title pages are allowed, but not required.

Q: CAN I MAKE A STAR WARS/SPIDER MAN/HARRY POTTER FAN-FICTION COMIC?

A: Nope. You must own the characters, settings, and stories. Unless it is in the PUBLIC DOMAIN.

Q: I'M UNDER 13/18 YEARS OLD, CAN I ENTER MY COMIC?

A: Unfortunately, if you are under 13 years old, you may NOT enter the contest. If you are between the ages of 13 and 17, you may enter, but must have permission from a parent or legal guardian. These age restrictions apply to the person submitting the comic, paying the submission fee, and accepting the awards and prizes.

Q: CAN I PAY WITH CHECK/CASH/MONEY ORDER?

A: At this time we only accept payments via our secure online checkout and PayPal.

Q: WHAT CRITERIA WILL MY COMIC BE JUDGED ON?

A: STORY, DIALOGUE, ART, COLORS, LETTERING, LAYOUT, PACING, ORIGINALITY, and the creative use of the assigned PROP, SETTING, and DIALOGUE.

Q: WILL YOU BE PUBLISHING THE WINNING COMICS?

A: We will be publishing the finalists (top 10 comics) into an anthology. We are working out how the anthology will be released, but we will be working out the details with all the finalists before moving forward.

Q: WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE A TEAM TO MAKE A COMIC WITH?

A: There is no minimum number for teams, so if you can write, draw, and letter the comic yourself, go for it! If you need help finding a collaborator, we recommend using social media like twitter, instagram, or reddit. Or reach out to us and we'll tweet out a message on your behalf.

Q: I DON'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE MY COMIC INTO A PDF, CAN YOU HELP?

A: HERE is a video about making a comic into PDF using Adobe Indesign (our recommended method). You can also check out the MAKING COMICS 101 page for places to reach out to other comic creators who may be able to help you out.
